BILL MCPEEK GAVE LILY ROSE "LUCKY DOG" HE WON AT THE "TRUCKERS 200" AND NEEDED THE HELP OF LIL HANK BAKER TO MOVE IT..

DAARA MEMBER PETE SILVA WRITES: My father George Silva raced in the State of Maine at tracks, such as Unity Raceway, Exeter Raceway, Old Norridgewock Raceway, Waterville/Oakland Raceway, and Windsor Fairgrounds..Back in those days, there were several fairgrounds in the state where they raced horses on the dirt tracks in the afternoons, and cars in the evenings..Believe it or not, at one time, you could race from Wednesday through Sunday..Most people don't realize that about racing in New England, back in the day..He was a hell of a racer and won many races..He was the Eastern Maine champion in 1955 and is in the Unity Raceway Hall of Fame..He has also been nominated for the Maine racing Hall of Fame this year.

It must be in the blood, I continued the family tradition, starting in the 70's at Unity Raceway, Oxford Plains Speedway, Speedway 95, Wiscasset Speedway and many others..I raced for Budweiser in the area on the old Nascar North tour all through New England..Ended up moving to North Carolina, working at Banjo's Performance Center in the early 80's..Racing at Hickory, Asheville, Greenville, South Boston, Langley..At that time, it was the Budweiser series, then became the Busch series, which included Charlotte, Daytona, Darlington, Dover, Martinsville and many of the other famous Nascar tracks..Moved back to Maine and raced the new Busch North tour through New England, Pennsylvania..Then moved back to North Carolina in 1993..Ran some more Busch races, All Pro Series, Super Late Models and Late Model Stock Cars in Hickory, Greenville, Asheville, Tri-County and Martinsville..I was fortunate enough to win races and championships at various tracks and the regional..Won a few of the Busch North races as well..But like everyone else, probably got beat more times than I won..So obviously, this disease is forever..The coupe that he drove, was a 37-38 Ford Coupe with a flathead..I just picked up a 4-1/8 x 3-3/38 flathead that was an actual racing motor and have picked up several other parts, so I've started the collection..

IF YOU KNOW GENE VITIELLO THIS IS WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT OUT OF HIM..THE NEED FOR SPEED HE PLACED A WING ON HIS GOLF CART...MAKES YOU WONDER WHAT HE HAD FOR A MOTOR...IT DIDN'T BOTHER HANK BAKER IN THE BACKGROUND WHO WAS LOOKING AT AN OLD CAR..

THIS WAS BILL MCPEEK'S IDEA..DAVE JARRETT HAS AQUIRED THE FOUR AMERICA '35 CHEVY FROM RICHIE IVERSEN..THEY PLAN ON DOING SOME NEEDED MAINTENACE INCLUDING REPLACING THE SEAT TO ACCOMMADATE A SKINNY DRIVER..WELL HERE IS RICHIE COMING OUT OF HIS #61 AND THAT MAY BE WHY HE NEEDS A NEW SEAT...THEY ALSO PLAN ON CHANGING THE NUMBER TO 97 WHICH THEY HAVE USED SINCE THE EARLY SIXTIES..

LOOK AT WHAT JIM HEILAND WOKE UP TO MONDAY IN MINNESOTA AFTER A WEEKEND AT THE TRACK..

Dave Cash's father-in-law "The Last of a Rare Breed" Bob Casto passed away at the age of 81..Bob raced midgets with his friend Red Lanham thru the 60's and 70' and was always trying to build a better race car..Bob belonged to B.A.R.A . Buckeye Auto Racing Association, Winchester Indiana Speedway OLD TIMERS CLUB and ATLANTIC RACING CLUB to mention a few..Bob then moved to the World of Outlaws in 1979 with the purchase of the yellow and black Gambler #98 from C.K. Spurlock which is the car Dave now drives with D.A.A.R.A..He and Red ran any track that would let them in along with drivers like Danny Smith, Sammy Swindell, Steve Kinser and the Blaney's along with the local drivers at their respective tracks..There are several active members with DAARA who new and raced with him..Kenny Coleman,Tom Coghlan and this past years guest speaker Jack Calabrase along with members of other clubs like Dave Hatcher #5 midget who was at Darlington..

FROM TOM COGHLAN: I knew Bob back in the late 60's early 70's when he and Red Lanham would come and run with Atlantic United Midget Racing Club events..Also Bob and Red would come to Daytona in February during Speeedweeks when AUMRC ran the 4 day event at the Daytona Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in the early 70's..Bob also ran with at Cattaraugus County,Little Valley N.Y., JFKenndy in Philadelphia Pa and Huntingdon Fairgrounds Huntingdon Pa and a few other tracks with us but I have misplaced some of my old news articles and entries lists..Bob was a great competitor and joker..What Red didn't think of Bob would think of and doing it..

I had basically forgot about Bob until DAARA's banquet this past February when Dave and his wife Connie walked out behind Vivian and I after the banquet when Vivian said hi and asked where they were from, when Connie said Dunbar W.Va and before I could say knew a midget racer from Dunbar, Connie said her father was Bob Casto..What a small world running into the Dave and Connie..Bob was one of the old breed midget racer and he will be missed..
