The price of fuel is outrageous..Let's look back to when gas was $1.00 a gallon cheaper..The difference between then and now is not as much as you may think..Most can attend an event on 20 gallons of fuel..That's $20.00 more...If you use 30 gallons, that's $30.00 more than it used to be..I have done some things to help cut some of these costs..First, I drive down the road a little slower..It has little effect on overall time and helps mileage a lot..Bring your own food and especially soft drinks..Think of the savings from concession stand costs..I freeze clear plastic jugs half full of water..When I leave for the race, I fill them full with water and they keep the cooler cold and I have ice water..I shop for race fuel prices and buy good used tires..By planning ahead a little we can race for the same money we used to..Don't leave that rig sitting at home..Let's race..Don't forget you are going to spend some money even if you stay at home!...Let's race!
Jim Kaserman showed the 51 Stock Car at the Denny's Old Time Diner Car Cruise last Friday night..There was a big crowd and he probably gave over 100 people the DAARA Web Site..People were so very much interested in vintage race cars, and our web site is so good that he knows they will enjoy it.
It was a good night as he won an "Award of Excellence" trophy, a tube of Shell Heavy Duty Grease (which he will use to grease the car trailer before Darlington), and a neat antique picture (door prize) in a frame that matches his bedroom furniture and other pictures....
Notice one of his dad's neat modifications on the #12 (lower photo)..After the #5 got a lot of wheel marks and door damage, his dad decided to combine the exhaust with body protection..He cut truck driveshafts and welded them outside the body and they served both as extensions to the header pipes (also unique for the 50's)..They actually made the car sound like an Indy Car of that day, it would howl on the track, especially the backstretch.
Jim's brother is looking for photos of his dad's earlier stock car, a 1934 five window coupe, ironically numbered 7-11 (with the actual dice forming the numbers) which he co-owned and sometimes drove with Chet Lemon of C & L Body Shop..It was purple with yellow wheels and black and yellow lettering except for the dice on the doors and trunk lid which were black and white....(Kaserman photo)

The plaque which is two sided, tells about the half mile built for horse racing that was changed to accommodate automobiles. It mentions the men who drove them and the engines they had..Like Wilburn, Collins, Schrader, Hinnershitz, Folse, Offenhauser, Miller and Riley. Also the plaque states that different MLB teams played there as home team during spring training..It states the Babe Ruth hit his longest home run there..Jackie Robinson has also played on this famous dirt.. Football was played there and names like Red Grange and Jim Thorpe were some of the great players to do so.
Some of the drivers and owners that raced there were on hand to help dedicate. Ralph Lagouri, Will Cagle, Buzzie Reutimann, Willard Smith, Pancho and Randy Alverez, Jamie Frankland, Jack Arnold and others.
On a personal note and to prove the truth to it. The plaque states that Tampa became known as “The winter auto racing capitol of the nation.” It still remains that way. East Bay is running sprints and I have to go..Max Dolder
